According to the Wisconsin Department Of Natural Resources, every vessel must have at lease one USCG approved life jacket per person on board. There are several different types of personal flotation devices (PFD) or life jackets which meet the standards. In addition to the requirement for life jackets one USCG approved type IV PFD must be on board an vessel 16 feet or longer with the exception of canoes and kayaks and available. Federal law required children under the age of 13 to wear a USCG approved PFD while underway in any open vessel.
